Hearing Tests & Assessments

The first step in understanding your hearing is to conduct a hearing assessment. This will test how well you recognise sounds across different frequencies and intensities. The purpose of assessment is to capture all the information required to accurately diagnose and treat hearing loss.

During your assessment, you audiologist will carry out the following:

  • Evaluate your answers to the questionnaires
  • Medical and otological history review
  • Speech Discrimination Tests – To assess your ability to accurately hear speech under differing listening conditions
  • Otoscopy – Physical examination of the outer and middle ear structures
  • Tympanometry – A test to check middle ear function
  • Pure-tone-audiometry – A test to check hearing acuity along the auditory pathway
  • Loudness Level Tests (where appropriate) to check hearing sensitivity

Your audiologist will then explain your results in a non-technical, jargon-free way, that will give you a full understanding of your hearing health. Your audiologist may offer advice on how your hearing capabilities could be improved if appropriate.

This does not always mean hearing aids. In fact, there are variety of communication strategies that could also help people to manage and improve on every day communication.

What Next?

If your audiologist feels that you would benefit from the use of hearing aids based on the results of your hearing assessment, they will recommend the most suitable treatment options, and demonstrate relevant hearing devices.

You will be presented with an exciting opportunity to start a completely free no obligation hearing aid trail. A hearing aids trail fitting appointment will then be booked for you, usually within 5-10 days. (If you do not wish to trial a hearing aid at this time or decide to trial a hearing aid at a later date you are most welcome to do so.)

Our hearing aid trial is completely free, it allows you to try the latest hearing-aid technology in the situations and circumstances that matter to you. That way you can make an informed decision about investing in your hearing health over the longer-term.

It is important to note that we will only ever recommend the use of hearing aids where there is a clear clinical benefit based on the results of the diagnostic tests conducted during your assessment appointment.

At the end of your hearing-aid trial period your audiologist will discuss your experience and the effectiveness of your trial hearing-aids with you. If you are satisfied with the improvement in your hearing ability you may decide to purchase new hearing-aids. Alternatively, you are welcome to return the trial devices without any further obligation

Allow 60 minutes for this appointment. Your audiologist will carry out initial fitting of hearing instruments, programmed to suit your specific hearing loss and lifestyle and give full instruction on use and care of your hearing instrument. Together you will set clear goals to maximise benefit from your hearing instruments.

Once payment is made, you will book your first appointment one week after fitting, and then at week three and week six following your initial fitting. There is then a scheduled follow-up appointment every three months for three years.

In addition to your regular scheduled follow up appointments, At Hear & Now, we also provide practical help as well as caring support whenever you may need it. We are fully accessible and accountable to you. you can see us any day of the week, including evenings and weekends by appointment.

Took my 99 year old mum for ear wax removal. We had a fantastic experience with all the lovely staff who definitely know their stuff! She left with much better hearing and a massive smile. She got straight back into her talking books once she returned home. Thank you so much.
