I don't usually post reviews of companies or services, but occasionally, I feel that it is important to add to the clammer, whether it is high praise or appalling service.
Up until 2022, I had relied on NHS hearing aids which initially were fine. However, over time, as my hearing deteriorated, particularly in the higher pitches. The kind lady at the NHS Audiology Department said that the NHS had nothing more powerful to help. In other words, I should go private to get any improvement.
Just before lockdown, my wife did the round of all the audiologists in Ripon on my behalf, and from what she said, few of them gave her nor me any confidence in their professionalism. Then Lockdown came, and I had to wait until I felt confident to go out into shops again - I am 73 years old. I ventured out and was unimpressed and disappointed by the High Street Opticians who offer a hearing aid service.
My wife had been to Hear and Now, and said that it was a private business, run by a husband and wife team. In these days of "shop local" that appealed to me, so I called in unannounced. I was greeted by Yan Wells who said that her husband Mike was with a patient, but she could book a free appointment to discuss my needs. I had a list of my needs and Yan answered them clearly and I booked an appointment.
The appointment was very relaxed and I felt that Mike immediately came over as a real professional with the care of his patients being his prime motivation. We discussed what I wanted from an audiologist, my hearing problems and how he could help. I clarified that he could supply the range of aids from any number of suppliers - he is not tied to any particular supplier. Many of the High Street audiologists are tied to manufacturers, or have 'own label' hearing aids made for them, as one large high street chemist chain does.
I agreed to go forward with Hear and Now and we booked an appointment for a full hearing test and analysis. All done, and I now know that my hearing is great in low frequencies and abysmal in the high ones! Maybe that is why my wife has called me dog deaf for so long!
Having been shown samples, and discussed what each aid could do for me, we agreed a device with an earmold that fitted inside my ears. It took a short time to arrive, Mike fitted them and set them up to my hearing frequencies. They have transformed my hearing, where before I was beginning to feel outside of conversations. I now feel involved. Before I was always asking people to repeat what they had said, all the time. Now, this rarely happens. Talking on the phone was embarrassing, now all is clear. Yes, it is the hearing aids that have made this transformation for me, not Mike nor Yan, but it takes a real professional who has access to pretty well all the devices available to diagnose what is spot on for you.
Have no doubts about this small family business. Book an appointment, receive a professional diagnosis, and breathe in the fresh air that is human interaction again.
Thank you Mike, thank you Yan.
